Back to SchoolIt's that time of year again. New shoes. New clothes. A new crossing guard one block away from our home. Getting stuck behind a school bus that hasn't been on my route for almost three months.
Today, the Elmhurst schools started their 2012-2013 academic years. Elmhurst College doesn't begin classes until next week, but watching students walking to school this morning reminded me of my time working at the Elmhurst Park District.
For years, I worked in a marketing role for the Elmhurst Park District. My office was located in Wilder Park, directly across the street from my alma mater. On my old car, I used to have an Elmhurst College Bluejays license plate holder. As an employee of the park district, I had a sticker on my rear window that meant I was allowed to park my car anywhere within Wilder Park.
Being a small, suburban institution, Elmhurst College has limited parking which can create issues. Some lots are available all day. Some have restricted hours. But students were never allowed to park in Wilder Park. Each year during the first week of classes, I stepped out to my car at lunch only to find a yellow parking ticket tucked under my wiper blade. I was always amazed that the police would see my license plate holder, but refused to spot my Elmhurst Park District sticker. The cycle would continue for years. Call the police. Explain why I shouldn't get a ticket. Have ticket excused.
Such fond memories of this time of year.
