MLB 2015 Game #16: Royals vs. CubsTonight is just a makeup game from late May. When the game was originally scheduled, it was an interleague matchup between the defending American League champion Kansas City Royals and the upward-trending Chicago Cubs. The Royals won the first game of the series, 8-4. Storms washed out the middle game, then the Cubs won the final game, 2-1.
Now this makeup game is the final regular season game at Wrigley Field. Not only are the Royals defending AL pennant winners, they also are the 2015 AL Central Division champions. The Cubs have also clinched a playoff berth. While they cannot claim the division crown, they still have an outside chance at gaining the top wild card spot. The Cubs conclude the regular season on the road against two division rivals who plan to play spoiler roles down the stretch: the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. More than likely, the Cubs will be playing the one-game wild card game on the road in Pittsburgh or St. Louis.
The narrative is different in late September. I'm stepping out on a limb, but tonight could provide a World Series preview. Both teams will square off this evening with identical 90-65 (.581) records.
Tonight the Royals will send Yordano Ventura (12-8, 4.40 ERA) to the mound. Despite clinching a division title, they are still vying with the Toronto Blue Jays for the top spot in the American League. The Cubs will answer with Kyle Hendricks (7-7, 4.23 ERA).
