MLB 2021 Game #3: Phillies vs. CubsThe last time I stepped inside Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning. Then St. Louis Cardinals catcher, Yadier Molina, singled off of Steve Cishek and scored Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna. The Cubs failed to answer and lost the game, 2-1.
Whenever I'm attending my final game of the season, or at least the final trip to a specific ballpark each season, I take a moment to walk around. I attempt to soak up the final moments before the long winter days ahead. That particular game took place on my birthday, so there was an extra reason to just linger in my seat for a few extra minutes. I still had one more game on to attend that season. SABR's Black Sox Scandal Symposium was one week away, so it wasn't quite the end of baseball.
Then along came COVID-19. Ugh.
Fast forward to 2021. I finally made it back to baseball games. So far, I caught the Chicago White Sox twice at Guaranteed Rate Field. But the Cubs schedule did not quite align with mine. Too many work deadlines, and the Cubs were on the road when I had brief moments free.
Good thing I have tickets to see the Cubs while they are on fire and tearing up the National League. Oh, wait. That's right. The have lost nine consecutive games and have dropped into third place in the National League Central. With the sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds, the Cubs have behind the Reds and now trail the front-running Milwaukee Brewers by 8.5 games.
The Phillies (39-42) are sending Matt Morse (0-1, 5.79 ERA) to the mound. The Cubs will answer with Zach Davies (5-5, 4.32 ERA).
