Magic Number: 18

Despite enduring a season high five game losing streak, the Chicago Cubs have dropped their Magic Number for winning the National League Central Division to 18. Okay, they really haven't done anything to make that happen. The Milwaukee Brewers have suffered important losses lately too.

Not only are the Cubs suffering losses, but the pitching staff has taken a beating too. Carlos Zambrano was diagnosed with rotator cuff tendonitis, and Rich Harden will be given nearly two weeks off due to discomfort. Honestly, this is probably the best time of year to experience these issues. With the expanded September rosters, the team has more arms to throw on the mound. The Cubs find themselves with a nice lead in the division, so they are fortunately not chasing anyone.

The division title is in sight for the Cubs, and Milwaukee has a good hold on the wild card. If both teams can starting stringing wins together, we can get the post-season picture in clear focus.

I thought with a day off the Cubs would come back strong yesterday. Not so much. Why does it always have to be a nail-biter to the end? (I know, I know, I'm just grateful they're still in it.) A four-game lead is pretty decent at this point in the season, but still...can't help but be a little nervous.

Oh, I'm nervous. I have a hard time even watching the games. Please oh please Cubbies, win tonight. Thanks.

It's remarkable that their 6 game skid hasn't cost them more than it has in the standings.

Even though the Cubs blew today's game against the Reds, the Brewers' loss to the Padres drops the Cubs' Magic Number to 16.
