The Playoff Picture

October is starting to take shape. Last night, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the New York Yankees to clinch the American League Western Division. Congratulations to any west coast Humzooers who claim an allegiance to the Angels.

In terms of Magic Numbers, the Chicago Cubs are closest to clinching their division. Their Magic Number is dropping slowly. This morning they are sitting on 13. Last night they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3. Of course, that game ended up closer than it needed to be.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Cincinnati Reds appeared to lend the Cubs a hand, but the Milwaukee Brewers rallied in the eighth to take the lead and seal the victory. With the Cubs' win, and the Marlins' victory over the Phillies, the Brewers found some breathing room in the wild card race.

It is just the numbers of wins by the first place team and losses by the 2nd place team needed in order for the first place team to clinch the division.

Any combination of Cubs wins or Brewers losses will lower the Cubs magic number. For example, if the Cubs magic number is 13, and we lose and the Brewers also lose, our number goes down to 12 (basically because even though we both lost, we're one game closer to the end of the year, and that's one less game the Brewers have to overtake us). If we win and the Brewers lose, our number goes down 2.

A better way to explain it is like this. If our magic number is 1, you better be ready for some serious celebration.

Carrie, I really want to see the Brewers get the wild card. The series against the Phillies is a perfect opportunity to pull away.
