10,000 Wins

Last night, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-6 in 10 innings to notch the franchise's 10,000th win. Over the past few days, I've been approached by fellow Cubs fans at work, from former places of employment, and other random spots. I've been asked the same question over and over again.

"Can you believe the Cubs?"

In fact, both the Cubs and White Sox are off to great starts. The Cubs have a 2-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. Even though the White Sox dropped their last two games, they have a one-and-a-half game lead over the Minnesota Twins.

A group of guys were talking about the Cubs at work the other day. The biggest surprise with the Cubs is that they are playing the game the right way. They take walks and don't simply try to hit home runs all day. Aramis Ramirez even appears to hustle these days.

October is a long way away, but so far, so good.

I attribute the Cubs turnaround to two things:

1. Lou Piniella. The guy doesnt take crap from anyone. If you play the game the wrong way, you will find yourself in his doghouse, which isnt pretty.

2. Fukudome. It seems that the Japanese players , Ichiro, Matsui, and now Fukudome play the game the right way. They take pitches, advance the runner, hit the cut off men, sacrifice themselves for the team. The Dominicans are known for their free swinging, homerun at any cost. They dont care about walks, they just want to throw the ball as far as possible with little regard for the cut off man, etc.....It seems that Fukudome is leading by example and it is rubbing off on all the players. Plus, you throw in guys like Theriot and Fontenoe who learned to play the game the right way at LSU and you can win several close games based only on knowing how to play the game the right way.

As I said before, anyone that has a name like "F**k you, Do Me" deserves the love of all.

It took me awhile to calm down from Prince's double home run night, but when I saw the standings in the paper this morning, I got excited at the thought of impeding HumzOo pennant race!!!!!

GO BREW CREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been all fun watching them play lately. Definitely not the same team as the one that played the first few games of season. I love that they're taking risks and playing aggressively. Though I was miffed that Piniella took out Lee last night so Pie could pinch run.
