MLB 2011 Game #9: Astros vs. Brewers

Tonight, Susan and I are headed to Miller Park to watch the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers play. When we purchase tickets well before the season, we have no clue what meaning will surround that game. Sure, I knew the game was a matchup of two National League Central rivals, but I had no idea the Brewers would be leading the division and that the Astros would be the worst team in Major League Baseball and selling off players on the eve of the non-waiver trading deadline. But that's where we are today.

The Astros will send J.A. Happ (4-12, 6.12 ERA) to the mound, and the Brewers will counter with Yovani Gallardo (11-7, 3.89 ERA). The Brewers currently hold a game and half lead over the second place St. Louis Cardinals, so they need to take advantage of the schedule before the Cardinals come to town. Last night, the Astros traded Hunter Pence to the Philadelphia Phillies, so the Brewers will need to feast upon their depleted opponents. At the moment, the Cardinals are hosting the equally inept Chicago Cubs.

Here's a look at the current NL Central standings:

Milwaukee Brewers 58-49 .542 ---
St. Louis Cardinals 56-50 .528 1.5 GB
Pittsburgh Pirates 54-50 .519 2.5 GB
Cincinnati Reds 51-55 .481 6.5 GB
Chicago Cubs 42-64 .396 15.5 GB
Houston Astros 35-71 .330 22.5 GB
