Back to Geocaching

In the past, I've blogged about a little hobby of mine called geocaching. Rather than dedicating space to explaining what geocaching entails, you can read about it in an old blog.

At the end of last year, I was extremely close to not meeting my annual goal. Each year, I attempt to find the next 100 milestone. Last year was my seventh year, so I needed to find my 700th before the start of 2012. I did, but just barely. I finished 2011 with 701.

With such a mild winter, we experienced nice weather very early in 2012. I guess I assumed it would not last so I didn't take advantage of the great weather and start my quest for 800. I found one while we were in Montreal. Of course, that was on the coldest day of our vacation. Then I found one in late June.

Ever since the Fourth of July, I've stepped up my search. Despite still having a long way to go, I'm currently up to 716. Only 84 to go before January 1, 2013.

I was just looking up some today but there aren't any near my parents' house (where we are). Tomorrow we are driving 2 hrs to my MIL's and I'm going to try to look for some along the way. We have not had good luck though. We looked for two more before we left on vacay and could not find them even though one had been updated recently. I don't know what we are missing, but it's really hard for us!

Okay... you gotta help me. I seem completely incapable of finding any caches. I just looked for two. Both have been found in the last month. I feel like I'm missing something. I wanted to find these without my boys so I could bring them back. They are getting discouraged at our inability to find them.

Hmmm. That's hard to answer. Can you send the my GC# for the caches you are looking for? I can see if I can make any sense of them.

Well we found one today but also couldn't find one. The first two I couldn't find were GC264FG and GC3CMCH. The one I couldn't find today was GC2ERF3. But we did finally find one today: GC2BG22. We were SO happy! We are in Yosemite for the next few days and will look for more. I have my parents with me, so maybe more eyes will help.

Great to hear. I looked at the caches you mentioned the other day. From the aerial maps, it's difficult to tell where they might be. Just remember they can be almost anywhere. Some are in trees, under lamp posts, inside fake rocks, etc. Keep at it. The more you do, the better you get.

One that we couldn't find yesterday, the hider sent me another hint, and we went back today and found it. The hint got me thinking more and we stopped by one of the two that I posted to you and we found it! I think we are getting better.

It just takes time and patience.
